How is SHR Hair Removal Vascular Removal System different to regular IPL treatments?

Our new SHR machines can still operate in the normal IPL mode. This is where one shot is fired at a time with the handpiece held still and then moved to the next area for each subsequent shot. Where the SHR mode differs, is it can fire multiple shots (between 2 - 8 per second) but at a lower energy level. The handpiece is moved around ("In Motion") as opposed to being held still with traditional IPL. A similar amount of total energy is transmitted, but studies have shown SHR provides the same or better results in a much more comfortable and safe manner.

Traditional laser or IPL technologies employ short pulses applying a vast amount of energy, which is transported to the hair root through melanin, reaching a temperature of approximately 70° Celsius. Energy reaches the root of the hair follicle solely through melanin. Skin and red blood cells have a similar absorption coefficient as melanin and therefore also absorb the high levels of energy produced by the laser and IPL methods. This can lead to swelling lasting several days, or even to third-degree burns.

SHR technology, on the other hand, utilizes the melanin path only partially (50%). Skin is penetrated down to the follicles, which produce hair growth. The hair melanin, as well as the tissue of the stem cells, is heated with low energy at a slow pace and over a longer period of time to a comfortable temperature of approximately 45° Celsius. Many people compare IPL to being flicked with a rubber band, but say SHR feels more like a hot stone massage.

These are two very similar methods and very similar machinesthat can be used for permanent hair reduction.

what exactly is the difference between the two?

he main difference is that laser machines use a laser to produce light at specific frequencies (most commonly Alexandrite at 755nm), whilst IPL uses a Xenon flashlamp to produce high output broad spectrum light in the range of 500nm to 1200nm. Filters are then applied to restrict the wavelength to the desired range.

Therefore the system is very versatile, since modifying only the crystal filter, each pulse of light can be improved and personalized for each specifictreatment.The different wavelengths penetrate the skin to different depths.

So which is better, Laser or IPL?

This seems to depend on who you ask! Practitioners who own laser machines will tell you they're the best, and vice versa. There is nothing wrong with laser hair removal but we believe IPL, being a newer technology, has more benefits to offer.
